Independent Data for the Trade

We got tired of reading prospectuses written by marketing teams and supplier brochures hiding the true cost of ownership. So we started tracking the numbers ourselves.

Our Mission

The hospitality industry is arguably the most data-poor major sector in the UK when it comes to supply chain and education transparency. Operators share anecdotes in closed groups; colleges publish obscure placement stats; suppliers mandate NDAs for custom pricing.

The Institute of Catering exists to aggregate this hidden data. We provide open-access, strictly factual comparisons of culinary qualifications, commercial equipment lifespans, and wholesale food margins.

How We Fund Our Work

We are fiercely independent. We do not accept payment to rank courses higher, nor do we run affiliate links for food suppliers. We fund our core research through the sale of premium enterprise reports to large hospitality groups and private equity firms investing in the sector. The public-facing directory remains free and untainted.

Our Methodology

  • Quarterly Price Audits We track a basket of 100 core ingredients across 15 major UK distributors every quarter to calculate true inflationary impact.
  • Alumni Wage Tracking We cross-reference HESA data with active polling of 2,000+ chefs to map the 5-year ROI of specific culinary diplomas.
  • Equipment Post-Mortems We don't read spec sheets. We interview maintenance engineers and head chefs about failure rates on high-capex items.
